Catherine Laub - Soprano

Catherine Laub soprano

Born and raised in Indiana, soprano Catherine Laub began singing in public and studying piano at age four. Her mother and sister are both musicians, and she grew up with stories of how her mother and two aunts spent their childhoods harmonizing. Through her teens, Catherine studied piano, sang in many choirs, played handbells, organized a barbershop quartet, entered and won voice competitions, and performed in plays and musicals, all while maintaining a perfect academic record with the aim of attending law school.

When the time came to decide on a program of study at university, she ended up at the world renowned Indiana University School of Music, studying voice performance with a French minor. During her junior year, she spent a semester abroad in Vienna, Austria and returned with a desire for ever-broadening horizons.

In 2001, Catherine moved to Princeton, New Jersey, completing a Masters in Voice Performance and Pedagogy at Westminster Choir College in 2003. While at Westminster, Catherine had the opportunity to perform with the New York Philharmonic under such conductors as Neville Marriner and Riccardo Muti as a member of the Westminster Choir. She spent the next few years in New York working in midtown Manhattan, performing, auditioning and studying.

In 2006 she moved to Vancouver and has since become an integral part of the city’s musical life, singing with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, and championing modern Canadian chamber music and innovative programming as co-director of the Erato Ensemble. She performs as an oratorio soloist with various choirs and orchestras, and appears in festivals of every stripe - from children’s music to queer cabaret. Current projects include running a summer chamber music training program and performing outreach shows in Vancouver and lower mainland through Art Song Chamber Music Group. Catherine and her partner, pianist Rita Attrot, specialize in chamber music and German and French art song. Catherine is also the section leader at Holy Rosary and the lead soprano with the Kallisto Trio. A published composer, author, voice teacher and yoga teacher, she can be reached at catherinelaub@hotmail.com
