In the years since Fiona Blackburn (www.fionablackburn.com) graduated from the University of B.C. with a degree in voice performance, she has been a guest soloist with many of this country’s leading ensembles, including the Vancouver Bach Choir, Symphony Nova Scotia, the CBC Radio Orchestra, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and Vancouver New Music, to name a few. Fiona first sang as a soprano with the Vancouver Chamber Choir from 1980 to 1988; after exploring various other musical projects, she is back as an alto. In the interim, Fiona sang numerous roles during five seasons with the Vancouver Opera. She was also a featured entertainer aboard an Alaskan cruise ship for five summers.
Fiona’s passion for Celtic music has led to two recordings, which have received enthusiastic reviews and airplay in North America and Europe. Fiona has recently collaborated with jazz pianist Miles Black, to create music for the Release of Souls (www.releaseofsouls.org) tour, a project of support, hope and healing for all who were affected by the events of September 11, 2001. Fiona also enjoys working with young singers and so recently went back to U.B.C. to earn a Bachelor of Education in Music Education. There, she was awarded the Don Wright Scholarship for excellence in choral education. Fiona is the Artistic Director of the British Columbia Girls Choir (www.bcgirlschoir.org), an award-winning group of young ladies who love to travel and sing. As a vocal and choral adjudicator, Fiona inspires many young vocalists to improve their skills. |
