Grace Chan - Alto
![]() |
Mezzo-soprano Grace Chan returns to her primary musical inspiration - choral music - with the Vancouver Chamber Choir. Both critics and audiences have been impressed by her musical sensitivity, strong stage presence and rapport with the audience. These qualities of her performances have been noted in media reviews such as Opera Canada, The Globe and Mail, Time Magazine, The Toronto Sun, The Vancouver Sun, The Georgia Straight, and other community daily publications. Trained as an optometrist and recording engineer, she has professional experience in many different areas of health related, medical, and music industries. A deeper spiritual pursuit and search into wellness led her to tap into her gift of voice. As a classically-trained and natural singer, she finds a rich synthesis through multidisciplinary, cross-cultural and song practices. Grace was awarded B.Mus. and M.Mus. from the University of British Columbia in Voice and Opera Performance. In her chosen home of Vancouver, she made her main stage operatic debut with Vancouver Opera and has appeared with major concert presenters in the city. She was highly acclaimed by Toronto critics for her creation of the role of Ama in "Iron Road", a world premier presentation of Tapestry New Opera Works. She has also garnered excellent reviews from national critics in her Stratford Festival début in 2006. Grace is a much sought after concert soloist. She has sung with the Vancouver Symphony, participated in Festival Vancouver, the International Bamboo Organ Festival, the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival and the Début Series where she made her radio broadcast début with CBC. She regularly appears in recitals in Canada, the US and Asia, performing new works and traditional song repertoires in their original languages. She has represented Canada and has performed for international dignitaries, actively pursuing collaborative experiments with forms and genres that cater to modern audiences. Grace has created a successful theatrical song piece with Victoria-based Puente Theatre and Belfry Theatre. She collaborates on numerous commission projects with composers and poets. Grace combines her performing career and teaching career with community outreach and volunteer work. |
